Apple Vision Pro U.S. Launch 2024
Apple's latest product, the Vision Pro, made its debut in U.S. stores on
Friday, marking the tech giant's first new release in seven years. The mixed
reality headset, a combination of virtual and augmented reality, is
generating excitement among early buyers.
CEO Tim Cook personally greeted customers at the flagship store in New York
City, where around 200 eager individuals, including international customers,
had lined up before the 8 a.m. launch. Interested buyers can also schedule
private demos at retail stores on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tim Cook has been vocal about the potential of augmented reality for
enhancing communication and collaboration. Now, with the Vision Pro, which
blends virtual and augmented reality, he aims to demonstrate that this
technology is the future of computing. Cook even touted it as "the most
advanced consumer electronics device ever created."
However, convincing consumers might not be a breeze. Priced at $3,499, the
headset is a substantial investment. It comes with 256 GB of storage, and
optional prescription lens inserts are available, starting at $149. Reading
lens inserts are also offered, beginning at $99. With additional accessories
like a $200 travel case and a $50 battery pack holder, the total cost can
reach up to $4,600, according to The New York Times.
The Vision Pro enters the market at a time when extended reality (XR),
covering augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, has seen limited mainstream
adoption. The headset, with its initial limited app availability, is
tethered to a battery pack about the size of an iPhone, providing
approximately 2.5 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Apple CEO Tim Cook's Takes On Apple Vision Pro
During Apple's recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook mentioned that the
Vision Pro is gaining popularity not only among individual consumers but
also in the business world. Companies like Walmart, Nike, Vanguard,
Stryker, Bloomberg, and SAP are already investing in and using the headset
for various purposes for their customers and employees.
Despite this enterprise focus, Cook emphasized that Apple will continue to
be a company catering to both consumers and businesses. He highlighted the
Vision Pro's versatility, mentioning its numerous potential uses. With
over 600 apps and games designed specifically for a "spatial computing"
experience, the headset is positioned as a versatile tool.
In the earnings report, Apple exceeded revenue and earnings expectations
for the fiscal first quarter. The wearables business, which includes the
Vision Pro along with products like Apple Watch and AirPods, performed
well, surpassing expectations despite an 11% year-over-year sales decline.
However, analysts don't anticipate the Vision Pro to be an immediate major
revenue driver for Apple.
